Medical and Pharmaceutical Applications

Compelling published research on medical uses of detonation synthesis nanodiamonds, also called ultra-dispersed diamonds, has emerged such as a highly efficient drug delivery medium and an imaging material. Examples cited include vehicles for small chemical drugs, especially hydrophobic molecules such as chemotherapeutics, or macromolecular biotechnology products, and in nanoprobe technology such as may be utilized for in vitro and in vivo imaging applications.

The following represent only some of the published examples of nanodiamond applications cited in publications and does not represent the full range of application which continues to be explored:

  • Penetration of the otherwise highly resistant blood-brain barrier with doxorubicin-doped nanodiamonds (ND-DOX) to treat glioblastoma; maintenance of ND-DOX levels in tumors for longer than doxorubicin alone; increased apoptosis; decrease of cell viability in brain cancer cell lines; limitation of doxorubicin delivered outside the tumor, reducing toxic side-effects as compared to unmodified doxorubicin.
  • Treatment of liver cancer, in combination of epirubicin attached to nanodiamonds (ND-EPI) to kill chemoresistant cancer stem cells and prevent secondary tumor formation; the ND-EPI combination delivered an otherwise toxic level of epirubicin as a safe and effective dosage.
  • Potential to combine nanodiamonds with other drugs as well as active targeting components against tumor cell surface proteins for targeted drug release.

Effective use of our nanodiamond product mandates some pre-treatment. The minimum level of treatment is the use of a high shear mixer to break-up the particles. The best practice is a combination of high-shear mixer and a minimum 400W ultrasonic blender. Refer to data sheet for product specifics.
